”Hi! My name is Ivica Petrovic. I'm 39 and I live in Pula, Croatia. From 1991 to 1994 I participated in war in which former Yugoslavia was falling apart. Just like any other war, this one was filled with blood, pain and misery which we were forced to confront every day.

I saw my friends starving, getting injured or even killed. It was hard to face it. Then one day someone gave me a pill and said it will make me feel better, that the pain will go away. So I took it. And then I took another one, and another one... and guess what, he was right. It was easier, it did release the pain. About a year later I went back home. Without the pills.

Then i started having nightmares about war fields and all of my dead friends and the pain came back. Then someone showed up again and said that he had something that would make the pain go away, that would make me feel better. That was heroin. So I took it. And it did make me feel better. The nightmares were gone. At least for a while.

 

Then the real nightmare began, not the one I was dreaming, but the one I was actualy living. I was an addict, heroin addict. Heroin became number one in my life. And with time it destroyed everything that was good in my life, my health, my familly, my home.
